“In this particular instance, we don't know if that was actually a sheriff's voice or not. Most likely it was just somebody seeking to do fraud in their own voice,” said Walke.
Collin Walke leads Hall Estill's Cybersecurity & Data Privacy practice. He says listening to this specific scam call, there’s nothing that stands out to him as an immediate red flag.
“There's nothing immediate in that, in part because they left their phone number. An average person looking to scam somebody else probably isn't gonna leave their phone number. So most people are going to immediately turn around and call that phone number,” said Walke.
